Judge Your Fat Loss Progress ©

If you don’t know how to properly judge your fat loss or fat burning progress from a particular exercise or nutrition regimen, you’re probably not going to be very successful.  It’s just like in sports…you have to know the score if you want to know who wins the game.  So in our fat loss and fitness efforts, we have to know our body’s score if we want to know if we’re winning, or in this case, losing.

I’ve found that a big mistake a lot of people make in judging their fat loss progress in the pursuit of a fit body is to be a slave to the scale.  The scale is a useful tool, no doubt, but I’ve seen far too many people stop doing the right things (like proper weight training) just because they gained a pound on the scale.

But you can’t blame yourself if you’ve been in this mode before…for years most of us were taught to watch the scale carefully when measuring if we did or did not burn fat.  But your body can fluctuate a few pounds up or down at different times of the day, every day.  This doesn’t mean you’ve burned or gained fat, so following the scale can play games with your mind.

Another big problem with using the scale as your sole judge of progress has become clear with many people adding lean muscle to their bodies recently.

Muscle weighs more than fat, so let’s say you been following a properly conducted resistance training routine for the past few months. You’ve gotten stronger and you’ve also added muscle to your body.  If you’re adding pounds of lean muscle to your body, you might see an up-tick in what the scale says.  But assuming you’re not gaining fat weight, it’s a good thing.  It’s not about weight loss, it’s about fat loss.

More muscle means more calories devoted to building that muscle and keeping it alive.  It also means your metabolism will get faster and become more efficient at burning fat.  You’ll see that number on the scale drop soon enough, as the new muscle has created a calorie deficit in your daily food intake.

What we really should be looking at here is body fat percentage, or how much your total weight is made up of body fat.  Most men will be more than happy with their bodies when they get into the 12-15% range, and most women will be satisfied with a fat percentage of around 16-20.  So go out and get a skin caliper, which is fairly inexpensive, or another measurement device so you can keep track of your relative body fat percentage. If it’s going down, keep doing what you’re doing, and don’t even look at that scale!

Another tool I recommend using when judging your fat loss progress is the tried and true mirror in your bathroom.  Now, this may sound simple, but use the mirror to judge your fat loss and muscle gain.

Combined with liberal use of your scale and keeping tabs on your body fat percentage, your mirror will provide all you’ll need to judge your progress.  The great thing about the mirror is that you’ll get great motivation from seeing your body change right before your eyes, and it will spur you on to even further progress!

The other important aspect of judging your fat loss progress is creating realistic expectations of your new body.  As I teach my Fat Burning Furnace students, our friends in the fitness industry often use the genetically superior to advertise their products and programs, and this can easily deceive you subconsciously into thinking all you have to do is follow their advice to look like the cover boy or girl.

Well, I’m here to tell you that even if you have the most efficient plan or program, you still may never look like your favorite physique superstar or model.

Research tells us that we are a product of our genetic inheritance.  We all have our own inherited physical characteristics.  For instance, some of us carry more fat in our bellies than others.  Some of us have more muscle fibers in our legs and arms.  Some of us carry more fat cells in our hips and thighs.  Some of us are short, some are tall, some have dark hair, some have blue eyes, etc.

Some of us lose fat and gain muscle easily, some don’t.  While this may come as no surprise, it is important to remember so we don’t sabotage our efforts in the gym or at the dinner table trying to burn fat.  What I mean by that is, just because you don’t lose fat in your belly at the same rate as your best friend doesn’t mean you’re doing the wrong things to lose it.

You can only compare yourself to you.  Lying in you right now is your very own best body - your own strong, lean, and healthy physique.  Everyone’s is different.  Yours might be highlighted by broad shoulders and powerful arms.  Or maybe it’s your slender and muscular waist that frames your body.

So don’t feel chained by your genetic makeup, feel liberated, knowing that you have the power to reshape and transform what you were given.

With the combination of the right knowledge and developed habits, you can burn fat fast and make such improvements in your body that you’ll impress almost everyone you know. I’ve seen it happen with my friends, family, and students…I’m talking about people seeing them and saying wow!

Don’t Be Realistic When Setting Your Fat Loss Goals - And Finally Achieve Your True Potential!

While you need to truly believe in your reason for working towards a goal, sometimes it is important to suspend disbelief and allow yourself to dream big! We are told to keep our goals realistic, and while there is some merit in this on a purely practical level, it can often leave us selling ourselves short.

How many stories have you heard about people who fulfill their wildest dreams, things they never thought they’d actually be able to achieve, but they went for it anyway. Most famous musicians and actors are in this category - they dared to dream, took the risk and now have the success to show for it.

We often talk ourselves down at this point - of course, they just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and we’d never be that lucky. As we grow up we are often taught to ‘know our place’ rather than following our dreams, as our parents try to protect us from disappointment and failure.

I can understand why parents want to protect us from this, but failure is such an important part of life. It is our failures that teach us the most important lessons, and surely it is better to ‘fail forward fast’ or not quite hit the high target we set for ourselves, than to achieve much less, staying in the safe zone, protecting ourselves from the feeling of failure but achieving much less in the process?

Learning to fail is what will truly make us stronger, so we have to be prepared for this. As Lao Tsu said, ‘it’s not about never falling, it’s about getting up every time we fall’. Every professional surfer in the world knows this - we look at them in awe as they carve up a huge wave, but they have endured their fair share of wipeouts. It is their ability to get back up and give it another go that gets them to world-class level.

If you are aged 40 and want to get the figure you had in your 20s back, some people will suggest you come up with a more ‘realistic’ goal. But if that ‘realistic’ goal doesn’t inspire you then you may find that the compromises you are making to get there seem too much to bear. Why can’t you look even better than you did in your 20s? There is absolutely no reason why not, so long as you set your mind to it and take the steps needed to get there.

The fact that you can get truly excited about the prospect of losing 30lb and how fantastic you will feel, means you are actually more likely to succeed. You know it is going to be hard, but the outcome is worth all your hard work. The challenges you face along the way will pale into insignificance in comparison. In comparison, aiming to lose just 5lb is just not so inspiring - it won’t have such a drastically positive effect on your life, so makes the temptations you face along the way harder to resist.

So, don’t let your view of what is realistic right now hold you back. Think about what you really want to achieve - dare to dream, and dream big!

Then break that dream down, and figure out how you can get there. It won’t happen overnight, but with the right strategies and consistent action you will get there! Having a step-by-step plan in place means your dream will inspire you, without making you feel overwhelmed. Keep your focus on realising that dream - and spend time around other people who encourage you to achieve it and believe in you.

Get Fit Without Hitting The Gym

For many of us the thought of puffing away on a treadmill in front of trim, fit and toned gym bunnies can keep us firmly stuck to the safety of our sofas. Busy and intimidating gyms can put off even the most determined person and with pricy memberships there is always a valid reason not to go. With the pressure to always look your best, and the medical need to be healthy, there is no avoiding exercise but there are a number of ways it can be achieved without pumping iron in a stuffy gym.

If the expense of the gym is what’s stopping you then an easy solution that won’t break the bank is to utilise your surroundings and go for a walk or jog around your local park. You can combine this activity with a visit to friends or to pick up some shopping from the local super market so you don’t have to feel like you’re taking precious time out of your day to exercise. If you like to work out with gym equipment but don’t have the spare cash to purchase your own then switch the expensive equipment for everyday items, such as cans of beans or bottled water as weights, or make simple changes, like taking the stairs instead of the lift, all of which can all can cut the cost of your weekly workouts.

Since I had my six year struggle with elevated anxiety and panic attacks in the Eighty’s I have been watching with interest the How To Cure Panic Attacks industry to see what’s going on there and if I could help.

I’ve had elevated anxiety all my life. But I didn’t always have panic attacks.

But when I got rid of my panic attacks, a blessed relief, it was suddenly a lot easier for me to deal with my anxieties. It was sort of a bonus gift.

I think that fear and anxiety are essentially the same thing. If you are afraid you will lose your job that will make you anxious.

I have often noticed that my anxieties always seemed to contain a component of the “fear of loss.”

Anxiety symptoms range from having to go back to the house to make sure the water is turned off to wondering whether or not you left the burner on on the stove.

Can you see the “loss component”? If you don’t go back and you DID leave the water on it could wreck your house and you would “lose” money.

There’s your loss. People fear loss.

So, why are we talking about this? It’s this. Anxiety is fear. One could say that anxiety is a symptom of fear.

Look how fear plays right into a panic attack. These attacks are frightening! You can start to think that you are losing your mind. There’s the loss. And there are other losses. Loss of control. Loss of esteem. Loss of respect from your peers.

If you have had these attacks you know exactly how fear-inducing they are.

You might think that a panic attack is imminent. That’s a fearful thought. Something strikes in your stomach and your anxiety ramps up. This might be an actual attack coming at you.

That thought is even more frightening than the first thought. It continues to ramp up. Panic is just around the corner, right here,. Now you ARE scared!

It concerns me to write this because I can see how, if you don’t have your attacks understood and under control, just reading about them could be enough to start one.

But you think about the attacks all the time anyway, don’t you? I understand.

Now we are getting to the interesting part, the essential simplicity of how to cure panic attacks.

Fears cause anxiety. These attacks are hyper-anxiety caused by fear and their continuation is further fueled by fear. There’s the “key” right in front of us!

The “key”, the “way”, the “method” by which to cure panic attacks is for the attack sufferer to lose their fear of the attacks.

If you haven’t encountered this idea before it would be a very good idea to let it sort of “sink in.”

Way back in the 80’s this is how I did it. I changed my perspective. I changed the way I thought about the attacks and I changed the way I saw them.

This enabled me to lose my fear of them. What a breakthrough!

The problem is that it took me six years to work it out! You don’t have to wait that long. There are good, experienced people out there that can show you how to lose YOUR fear of the attacks and, when you do, you’ll be free of them.

4 Quick Weight Loss & Fitness Tips

We all know how busy the holiday season can be. However, It is a big mistake to risk losing the lean muscle mass and strength that you have worked so hard to build and maintain. Do not let yourself get caught in the trap of not working out to make more time for holiday errands and events.

Why?

Losses in lean muscle mass will lower your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which accounts for the vast majority (about 60 - 75%) of your total daily calorie burning.

This means that everyday you will be burning fewer and fewer calories which will put you at a much greater risk of putting on ugly, unwanted body fat during the holidays. Plus, losing strength will mean that the next time you start to work out your performance will be sub par and you’ll get smacked in the face with that ugly word that no one ever wants to encounter when it comes to training: regression!

There are many clever ways to maintain or even increase the number of calories you burn per day, both from exercise and from your normal daily activities, to stay fat-free this holiday season. Use the strategies below to maintain and/or increase your current amount of lean muscle mass and maximize your daily calorie burn to best protect yourself against the deadly holiday bloat!

1. Perform at least one intense strength training session per week

Studies show that just one total body strength training workout per week during times when you cannot train as frequently as you normally do is an effective way to maintain your current levels of strength and lean muscle mass.

So, to best maintain your strength and lean muscle mass, shoot for at least one good strength training workout per week to stay buff during the holidays and to prevent unwanted regressions in fitness.

To best prevent weight gain, aim for three total body strength workouts per week.

To maximize fat burning, perform three total body strength workouts per week and also perform three cardio interval workouts per week on non strength training days.

Of course, another extremely effective training method is high-intensity interval training (HIIT). This method not only produces excellent results, it also takes about half the time!

2. Hit Your Totals

When you honestly cannot even find a 20-minute time slot to complete and effective total body workout, look for hidden chunks of time during the day to get in a certain number of daily repetitions for a certain number of exercises that work the entire body.

Got a free moment between errands?

Then, bang out 20 squats, 10 push-ups, and 10 rows.

Using this method throughout the day will lead to big numbers by the end of the day that will burn the same amount of calories in addition to creating similar muscle building effects as if you did all the exercises at once during a single workout.

It is important to note that this “Hit Your Totals” routine is merely a back-up option to the ideal 20 - 60-minute training session.

Make sure to pick multi-joint, compound movements that hit as much of your body’s major muscle groups in a the shortest amount of time possible (e.g. squats, deadlifts, lunges, push-ups, rows, etc.). Use the plan below as a guide to build your own “Hit Your Totals” workout.

Plan A Bodyweight Squats: 100 - 200 total reps Push-ups: 50 - 100 total reps Dumbbell or Band Rows: 50 - 100 total reps

Plan B Bodyweight Lunges: 50 - 100 total reps per leg Dumbbell or Band Overhead Press: 50 - 100 total reps Dumbbell or Band Deadlifts: 50 - 100 total reps

Adjust the repetitions accordingly based on your current fitness level. Perform this routine every other day, and alternate between Plan A and Plan B for variety. You can either hit your totals by completing all the reps for one exercise before moving on to the next, or you can rotate exercises throughout the day until you hit your total for each.

3. Rage Against the Machines

Machines have made us an incredibly out of shape and overweight society. This holiday season make it a point to not use them! Now I don’t mean to say that you cannot drive to the mall during the holidays. However, when you get there, park as far away as possible so you can do more walking to get inside. Avoid using elevators and escalators. Instead, use the stairs; all those stairs truly add up. Stay on your feet as much as possible and resist the temptation to let a machine do the work for you.

4. Engage in more outdoor holiday activities

I have been in some pretty incredible snowball fights in my day. Though I was always having a blast while pelting my friends behind cleverly built igloos, I was never aware of how exhausting a good snowball fight can truly be until I came indoors afterwards. My snowsuit was soaked with sweat and I had spent the last 30 minutes or so in total fight or flight mode. Talk about an awesome way to burn calories without even thinking about it!

Get outdoors this holiday season and throw around the old pigskin or have your very own “Ice Bowl.” Go sleigh riding with the family and friend. The march up that big hill all day will burn tons of calories, and the ride down is so worth it!

Once again, all these calories here and there truly do add up and could make a difference between you fitting in your pants or ripping your pants by the time the clock strikes midnight this New Year!

Panic Attack Remedies

I’ve heard of panic attack remedies but I only know of one actual cure. This is just my personal experience but I have a pretty unique story.

I had my first panic attack back in the 80’s and it was a whopper. Like happens to most people it seemed to just arrive from nowhere. Up until then I didn’t know what a panic attack was, and, actually, I didn’t learn what they were for quite a while.

The part of my story that is unusual is not that I had these attacks for six years. What’s unusual about this is that I worked out a way of thinking that enabled me to get rid of these attacks altogether.

I had elevated anxiety levels my whole life. My doctor said I was just “wired” that way and that I’d probably grow out of it. If he was still around I’d tell him he was almost right.

I just got better at keeping my anxieties down as I grew older.

But panic attacks are wholly different than anxieties in the normal or even elevated states. Anxiety attacks, as they are also known, are huge spikes of fear that cause an adrenaline surge which floods your mind with the “fight or flight response.”

In this state the sufferer experiences a sudden rise in heart rate, sweating, red flush to the skin, and sometimes heart palpitations, dizziness and shortness of breath to name a few.

This is often accompanied by a feeling of unreality, like you are watching a bad movie with you in it, and it often gives you the fearful thought that you are “losing it.”

That would be your mind you fear you are losing because, while there are “triggers” for these attacks there are rarely any real dangers or imminent disasters to be panicking in reaction to.

So the remedies I used to help get through panic attacks were my attempts to get rid of the attack or at least lower it to a livable level of panic, if that exists.

My best remedy was best used right at the start of an attack and couldn’t be used in all situations. I would simply step outside and start running at a slow jog. The way it worked for me was that usually the panic attack would quit and not come back right away. And if I ran until I was exhausted, the attack wouldn’t return that day.

I had another remedy I’d use that I called the “water method.” When I was sort of “stuck” in a social situation when the attack came on, I’d excuse myself to the bathroom, go in there, turn on the water and listen to it’s sound.

Then I would start rinsing my face and do that twenty or thirty times, and while noticing the cooling effect on my red and sweaty face, I’d think “I’m washing little pieces of the fear away and I’m cooling down. This is good.” So simple, yet, for me it was what felt like a life saver.

It wasn’t as good as the running, however.

Those were two of my coping methods but coping methods are only temporary. I needed a cure. I wanted those attacks to go away and remain gone.

And I did it by working out a way to let go of my fear of an imminent attack.

What I discovered was that getting rid of the fear of panic attacks was the key to getting rid of the attacks themselves.

In fact that very idea has turned out to be one of the most successful cures for the attacks and it has worked wonders for many thousands of people.

Do You Make This Fat Loss Mistake?

You tried it in the past.

Gave all your effort.

Bared the pain and hassle in an attempt to get rid of your excess stomach fat.

How?

Like most others. Limited your food consumption and started getting more “active”.

And it seemed to work. At first. Then NOT so much. Your body was thinking… “WOW! I’m getting less food and more work, I think I’ll use some of this excess stomach fat for energy.” But after a while the tune changed.

Your body began thinking… “YIKES! All this extra work without the food I need, I think I’ll store some so I have it on reserve.” Guess what?

You are stuck in a very familiar pattern. Probably haven’t noticed it. Every time you get sick n’ tired of your excess fat you most likely go through the same familiar cycle… 1. Eat less …

2. Sweat more …

3. Shed a few pounds at first and then gain it all right back. It’s what most people do. The equivalent of starving themselves. They know nothing else. Unfortunately it is the biggest fat loss mistake you can make.

For one rather unpleasant reason… IT MAKES LOSING WEIGHT EXPONENTIALLY HARDER… AND HARDER… AND HARDER.

Do this every time you want to lose weight and guess what your body starts thinking?
