With the holiday season now behind us many have turned their attention  to fulling those New Years resolutions. Weight loss being one that usually tops that list. Many aim to achieve this through proper diet and exercise. However there are many who opt for the quick fix solution such as diet pills or supplements. It is important to exercise caution when taking any supplement. My advice is to always consult with your physician before consuming any of these products. All because a supplement is called natural and comes from a health food store does not necessarily mean it’s safe and good for you.

Recently the FDA has put out a warning to stay away from weight loss diet supplements making outlandish claims. These supplements contain ingredients such as sibutramine that could lead to strokes, heart attacks or heart palpitations. Subutramine is an anti-appetite suppressant drug similar to amphetamines. Many of these products are from China and marketed as natural ancient remedies for weight loss. As many of you are probably aware of, products from China have made the news recently from tainted milk and dog food to lead paint on children’s toys. So I would exercise caution when purchasing products produced from this region.

In many cases some of these products where found to contain three times the normal dose of sibutramine. What is disturbing is these weight loss products do not mention sibutramine as an ingredient on their labels. Therefore their consumers are not aware they are consuming this potentially fatal drug.

So if you are deciding to resort to weight loss supplements the FDA has advised to avoid the following:
