The Benefits Of Joining A Women’s Only Gym

Happy New Year everybody! Well I hope all of you enjoyed your holiday season. Now that the new year has dawned we can start following through with those new years resolutions: quit smoking, lose weight, eat healthier, or join a gym. To all you ladies put away your bubbly and leave your holiday over indulgence behind til next year. Now it’s time to get serious about your health!

There are many benefits to working out at a women’s only gym. One is it provides a more welcoming environment to women of all shapes and sizes. By this I mean they will not be judged by their looks or intimidated by the men. Many women who attend my classes are self-conscious therefore creating a comfortable atmosphere allows them to concentrate on their workout.

Secondly, the some of the equipment or co-ed classes may not be suitable for women. In my experience I rarely saw women exercise in the free weights section in a co-ed gym. Also, the power difference between the men and women in a class such as kickboxing can be overwhelming for a woman who has to partner up with a man. Usually their male counterpart will blast through the pads knocking their poor female partner around the room. This can make a great workout into a dreadful experience along with unwanted injuries. Women’s exercise programs should be tailored to their needs and body types.

Third, a women’s only program is not as competitive and more supportive. The women feel like they are a part of a team working towards a common goal. My experience confirms this to be true and a major difference to men’s classes I have taught. There are fewer egos involved in a women’s exercise facility and in most cases everyone helps one another.

So if you don’t feel comfortable in a coed gym or hesitant as you begin your journey to a healthy new you. Consider a women’s only facility or women’s exercise program. Believe me I know what it was like when I first entered the gym as grossly skinny under weight kid. I remember wearing an oversized sweater and sweats to hide my body. Yes I was very self-conscious as I was often teased as a youngster about my weight. So don’t feel ashamed, just believe in yourself, stick to your goals, because the rewards are well worth it.
